Ingredients for pumpkin dog treat biscuits

Preparing the pumpkin

Carve one full pumpkin and put into a blender or a food processor. Blend it until it becomes smooth. You can use any part of the pumpkin except its skin as an ingredient for this dog treat.

You can alternatively use canned pumpkin in case you cannot access the real one. Be careful not to use the one that comes as a pie because it contains a lot of sugar which is not suitable for your pet. You can thus use pure pumpkin puree.

1 cup of blended pumpkin

3 cups of whole wheat flour

1 tsp. milk

2/3 cup of rolled oats

1/3 cup of corn meal

2 tsp. vegetable oil

1 tsp. baking powder

1 tsp. cinnamon

1/3 cup of water

Additional flour for rolling the dough

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 250 degrees

Place all the ingredients in one big bowl and mix the ingredients thoroughly

The resulting mix will be thick dough. The dough needs to be thick enough to roll it. Add some water till it is the consistency you need it to be. If the dough is light, then keep on adding flour and the rolled oats to make it thick enough.

Roll the dough to make it to a thickness of ¼ inches

Use a cookie cutter to cut the dough in squares

Lightly grease a cookie sheet and place the cut squares on it. Place in an oven which has been preheated to 250 degrees

Use the middle rack of the oven and bake the cookies for 60 minutes.

These cookies can become brown very easily so you need to keep on checking time and again to ensure they don’t become dark. If they show signs of getting dark, you need to keep on adjusting the temperature of the oven.

After the one hour is over, take the biscuits out of the oven and let them stand throughout the night.

These biscuits can be stored at room temperature for some weeks and still be viable or they can be stored in the refrigerator for as long as one month.

This recipe will make more than 30 biscuits, depending on the size of the cookie cutter you use. Canned pumpkin is easy to get during fall. In case you are planning to make these treats several times in a year, you can buy several cans of the pumpkin and stock them. This will ensure you have all you need whenever you want to make a batch.

If you have a freezer space,  you can buy some sweet pumpkins, puree them and then freeze them to use for future pumpkin dog treat recipes.
